Moving timeline: what to do and when

Enter your moving date, your current and your new municipality, and your lease if you like. You get the deadlines in the right order, each with the rule it is based on, and as a calendar file if you want. Free, no account, calculated in your browser.

Your timeline

Ubivo only receives the two places, to look up the canton and premium region. Moving date and lease stay in your browser; nothing is stored.

Choose the municipality or enter the postcode.

Enter both places and the moving date, and your timeline appears here.

What the timeline knows and what it does not

  • Every date is based on a legal rule, with a reference. Where there is no uniform rule, it says “ask the municipality” instead of a date.
  • Health insurance and reference rate only appear if their date lies between 120 days before and 90 days after the move.
  • Not in the timeline: supplementary insurance (deadlines per policy), moving from or to another country, school and childcare, vehicles and dogs. Other rules apply there.

Not legal advice. The timeline follows the law and the sources cited; what counts is your lease, your insurance policy and what the authorities tell you.

Frequently asked questions

By when do I have to register in the new municipality?

Within 14 days of the move. The federal Register Harmonisation Act requires the cantons to set this deadline. The municipality will tell you which documents to bring.

Do I have to change health insurer because of the move?

No, unless your insurer does not operate at your new place of residence; then basic insurance ends with the move. The premium depends on where you live. You can switch as usual on 1 January if your notice reaches the insurer by 30 November.

My lease only ends after the move. What can I do?

Then you keep paying until the lease ends. You can leave earlier if you propose a reasonable, solvent person who takes over the lease on the same terms (Art. 264 OR).

What does Ubivo receive from my entries?

Only the two places, so that Ubivo can look up the canton and premium region. Moving date and lease stay in your browser, and the calendar file is created there too.

Method and sources

  • Notice: the same calculation as “Give notice on your flat”. The lease ends on the first notice date from the day before the move; counted back from that date by the notice period (at least three months), receipt on working days, registered mail with the full collection period. Customary local dates only where officially documented.
  • Health insurance: the same deadline as “Switch health insurer” (receipt by 30 November, FOPH recommendation for sending). From when the premium of the new place applies is not expressly regulated by law; the timeline gives no date for it.
  • Municipality: registration within 14 days of the move (federal law). Federal law sets no deadline for deregistering.
  • Taxes: residence on 31 December of the year of the move, as in “Move before or after New Year?”. Within the same canton only where the canton’s rule is verified.
  • Reference rate: published quarterly on the first working day of March, June, September and December.
  • Calendar file: all-day entries in iCalendar format, created in the browser.
